What Parents Search About Diabetes in Kids

We analyzed 327 US search queries about diabetes and blood sugar in children — 71,970 searches a month — plus three years of monthly trends. The result is a map of what worries parents, when, and what they barely search for at all.

Key Findings

  1. Most searching happens before a diagnosis. 69% of child-specific search demand is about spotting symptoms and figuring out whether a child has diabetes. "Signs of diabetes in kids" alone draws 7,400 searches a month — 80% of the volume of every daily-management topic combined (ketones, devices, school, food, camp and blood sugar targets).
  2. Child-specific searches are growing; general ones are not. Comparing the 12 months to September 2026 with the 12 months to September 2024, "signs of diabetes in kids" grew 17% and "diabetes in children" grew 78%, while the general query "type 1 diabetes symptoms" changed by -1%.
  3. Newborn low blood sugar is a bigger search topic than DKA and diabetes technology combined. Parents search about newborn hypoglycemia 5,160 times a month, versus 4,500 for ketones, DKA, CGMs and pumps together.
  4. Parents of young children search far more than parents of teens. Searches naming a toddler outnumber those naming a teen 6 to 1 (4,670 vs 770 a month) — likely because teens search for themselves without an age word.
  5. Search follows the calendar. Diabetes camp searches peak in June (65% above their average), 504 plan searches in September as school starts, and general type 1 symptom searches every November — National Diabetes Awareness Month.
  6. Money and school are almost invisible. Only 20 school-related queries and 2 about insurance or disability benefits for a child reach even 20 searches a month — together 0.9% of demand.

"Symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children" also rose, but its curve is dominated by a one-month spike in May 2026 (about 14,206 searches, versus roughly 1,000 in a typical month), so we leave it out of the trend comparison. One device query moved the other way: "child insulin pump" climbed through 2025, then fell to 113 searches in September 2026.

Ketotic hypoglycemia — the most common cause of low blood sugar in young children without diabetes — peaks in August (34% above average). The 504 plan series is small (about 50–150 searches a month), so treat its exact month-to-month values with caution; the back-to-school rise repeats in every year of the data.

What This Means

For parents: if you're searching symptoms right now, you're in the largest group in this data. The classic signs of type 1 diabetes in children are increased thirst, frequent urination (including new bedwetting), weight loss, and tiredness. If your child has these, ask your pediatrician for a same-day blood sugar or urine check — a simple test that can catch type 1 diabetes before it becomes an emergency. Our guide to diabetic ketoacidosis explains why speed matters.

For clinicians, schools and diabetes organizations: parents look for help at predictable times — before diagnosis, in the first weeks after, at the start of the school year, and before summer camp. Resources timed to those moments, and written for parents of toddlers and newborns, meet the largest unmet demand in this data. Questions about cost and benefits barely appear in search, which suggests families get that information elsewhere — or not at all.

Methodology

Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer API (US database), pulled October 12, 2026. Average monthly US search volume over the latest 12 months, as estimated by Ahrefs. Trend data: Monthly US search volume estimates, October 2023 to September 2026.

Query selection: we pulled keyword ideas for diabetes, blood sugar, ketones/DKA, devices, school and camp, food, and family-life seed terms, keeping queries that contain a child word (child, kid, toddler, teen, baby, infant, pediatric and similar) and have at least 20–30 searches a month. We removed off-topic matches (kidney disease, gestational diabetes and pregnancy, adult-only camps, pop-culture and place names), leaving 327 unique queries.

Topics: each query is assigned to one topic by ordered keyword rules (newborn → ketones & DKA → low blood sugar → blood sugar levels → devices → type 2 → school → camp → food → family life → treatment → symptoms & diagnosis). Topic totals are sums of the queries in each topic.

Growth compares average monthly volume in the last 12 months of the window (October 2025–September 2026) with the first 12 months (October 2023–September 2024). Seasonal indexes average each calendar month across the three years and divide by the query's overall monthly average.

Limitations: search volumes are modeled estimates, not exact counts, and small queries (under ~100 a month) are noisy. The data only covers queries that name a child; parents who search "type 1 diabetes symptoms" without an age word are not counted in the topic totals. Each request returns at most 100 queries, so the largest topics are under-counted at their long tail. Search interest is not the same as the number of children affected.
