Tom Karlya wrote the following comment about this article:

This is the first time that scientists have been able to successfully deliver oxygen locally to beta cells using a biomaterial. This is huge-----YOU and many LIKE you helped fund this work.....do not let it stop----get involved today. With two kids with T1 I do not get excited often....this is a good one that excites me. Really. Email me at tkarlya@drif.org and ask me how to get involved right where you live. IN IT TO END IT.

Type 1 diabetes prevention 'better than cure'

A Winnipeg doctor wants to give newborns at high risk of Type 1 diabetes a vitamin to try to prevent them from developing the disease.

Dr. Shayne Taback is a pediatric endocrinologist. He and his team in other locations say it is time to rigorously test the idea that high doses of vitamin D could prevent children from getting Type 1 diabetes — children like Katrina Tobin.

Smallest Insulin Pump System and First-Ever with a Touch Screen

During hypoglycemia, patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who perform a working-memory task (WMT) have more activation of brain regions and less deactivation of the default-mode network (DMN) than control subjects, according to a study published online Oct. 7 in Diabetes.

Stem Cells To Fight Diabetes

Doctors believe they are getting closer to a cure that could dramatically change the lives of people with Type I Diabetes.

In patients with Type I Diabetes the body thinks the pancreas is a foreign invader, so it starts to destroy the organ's islet cells.

Those are the cells that produce insulin.

Now researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center are trying to create islets from adult stem cells so that they can be transplanted back into the patient, eliminating the need for constant blood sugar monitoring and insulin injections.

Home Urine Test Measures Insulin Production

Home urine tests can check the insulin production of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, according to a British study in Diabetes Care. Experts said urine tests can help gauge endogenous insulin production, distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes and detect rare forms of diabetes. The findings may help improve diabetes treatments, researchers added.
