- Where do you live?
- Mystic, CT
- Who or what makes your family laugh?
The kids! They have wonderful senses of humor.
- What is your favorite sports team? or activity?
We are split - Yankees and Indians. We also enjoy running 5K's together (though not the youngest ones yet).
- What helps you get through the day?
Hunter and seeing how well he handles all that he has to do to get through the day. We have to be there to help and support him. Having wonderful friends and family helps too.
- What is your favorite meal or snack? Why?
Hunter's favorite meal is pork tenderloin or anything his grandpa cooks. We also enjoy our occassional ice cream dinners. Any meal that my husband can be at is always better, being
active duty Navy, he is gone a lot.- What resources have been useful since diagnosis? Please share a tip you think would be helpful for other parents.
The internet and Diabetes forums have been helpful. We take that information, talk about it together, and then with our endo. Our endo is wonderful and supportive! Try and meet others who deal with this to bounce ideas off of.
- What was the date your child was diagnosed?
March 10, 2005 - it's in a tattoo on my ankle.
- What question would you ask everyone who lives with Type 1 diabetes?
Have you been able to fnd a great baby sitter and how? My parents are wonderful but if we move we can't depend on them and need our adult time when Joel is home.
- Has your child attended a diabetes camp? If so, which camp? If they enjoyed it, please tell us more about their experience.
YES, Camp Joslin (run by the Barton Center). He has been 3 times and this summer went for his first 2 week session and loved it! He can't wait to go back. It's great for us too, knowing that he is safe and with others who get it!
- What is your favorite type of family vacation? Do you have any tips managing diabetes on vacation?
We really enjoy camping. Pack twice the supplies that you think you will need and don't forget the insulin in the fridge as you walk out the door!
- What do you think???:
I think that together we can push for a cure and advancements in management until there is the cure.

Laura Sep 25, 2011 (8 months ago)We only have my husband and daughter so far who are diabetic. I know the amount of food we have to take with us when we hike. I can't imagine three energetic boys. I joke that we are going to need a pack mule soon. Hats off to the Watson family.
