- Online forums with other parents dealing with the same thing. Sharing ideas, but knowing that each child is different. My tip:IF your child is diagnosed young, use pictures on the fridge to explain who they might feel and what they should eat. Like the first column put in sugar levels 0-3.5 and draw a sad face, put lollies, soft drink etc and when they are 3.4 for example while treating :) point to the pictures.

Kathy Bowman Sep 8, 2010 (2 years ago)It was Spring, beginning to warmer outside, my son was 2 and a ball of energy. I assumed that he was drinking so much because of all the extra play outside. But when he downed a 6 oz. cup of water without taking a breath at 2 yrs old after brushing his teeth I became concerned. The day after that scenario, his grandmother said his back was hurting where his Kidneys are. I took him to the Dr on a Friday thinking maybe he had a Kidney infection but was sent immediately to the hospital. That's where we spend Mother's Day. We were blessed because I was already watching all of our sugar intake so even though his sugar was high he had small ketones

Karen Smith Sep 8, 2010 (2 years ago)It was the last day of 4th grade for my daughter. She had been getting up in the night to use the restroom alot. I made an apt for 8:00am so we could just get her urine checked and then she could go to school for her last day. The doctor sent us straight to the hospital for 2 days.

Natalie from Parenting Diabetic Kids Sep 8, 2010 (2 years ago)We had family visiting from Maine and Florida getting ready to celebrate our oldest daughter Naomi's 12th birthday. The dx was April 15th and it was the last day of school before spring break. After we took JoJo to her primary doctor she was diagnosed with type 1. We spent the next 4 days in the hospital and not home with our family. That was a little over 5 years ago.

Angela Brinegar Sep 7, 2010 (2 years ago)We had worried all summer what was wrong with our little boy. We had been going to the dr. every month for a weight check. We had also just had a very rough week with our teenage daughter, but I guess after we were rushed to the hospital and our life instantly changed, she did too. Always have to look for the bright side I guess. God works in mysterious ways.
