- How do you get your child to NOT PANIC every time you need to do an infusion set/needle? We've tried everything but still Gail will scream and cry worrying that it'll hurt (95% of the time she jumps up afterwards with a smile and says "that didn't even hurt")

Maritza Rothmann Jul 1, 2010 (2 years ago)My son was diagnosed at age 16 mo and he is now 4. We still struggle with the patch change even if we put emla on an hr before. Now he wants to change without the cream so we say to bite down really hard on the end of a cushion until we are done. He also then says it didn't hurt most of the time even though we also have tears before the time. Good luck to you.

Chris Jun 29, 2010 (2 years ago)My son no longer panics for pump needle changes. But he hated the sensor site changes , which we stopped doing, not worth it. Anyways, we used to have him put ice on it 5-10 minutes before. Also, we'd try to distract him durng changes, like give him the cat to hold and pet. I suppose you could use a stuffed animal. The ice helped alot though!

Michelle Freedman Jun 29, 2010 (2 years ago)Hi there. I have an 11 year old daughter who was diagnosed at age 7. She began using a pump 1 1/2 years ago and at first would faint every time we did a site change. A friend suggested this trick which worked for her daughter: Have your daughter choose a silly word (her example word was Pumpkin) and yell it as loud as she could when you released the site. This way they don't have to hear the loud click sound and it is funny. Good luck!
