- Where do you live?
- Dublin, Ireland
- What Makes You Laugh
- Our three boys, 7, 5 and 2, especially the two year old when he copies the older two! Ben is the 7 year old with Type 1 Diabetes.
- Favorite Sports Team
- Liverpool FC, and soccer, with three boys, what else!! As a family we love to go to the park/playground and run riot!
- What Helps You Get Through
- My gorgeous children, and how mature and brave and grown up they can be. Even our 2 year old will say, 'Ben do his bloods now'?!
- Favorite Meal
- Dinner time, when we all sit down together and eat as a family. Particularly at weekends. Unfortunately our poor Ben is the worst eater ever! No potato, no pasta, just bread and chicken and yogurts and cereal!
- Helpful Resources
- the way we read the sugars, we use a different way, like sugars should be between 4 and 8. Also pumps are rare here, but we got great news on Monday that we're now on the priority list for one! Yippee! Only a couple of hundred kids out of over 2000 are on pumps in Ireland! We use good old fashioned syringes and vials of insulin. Tip for other parents.... Hang in there, it gets easier, talk to parents of other children with diabetes, and don't be afraid to ask for advice!
- Date Diagnosed
- 8th October 2008, aged 5
- Question for Everyone
- Does it get you down all the time? Is there anyone else with a seriously fussy eater and how do you deal with it? My frustration is seeing that school lunch box coming home still full, and sugars so low.
- Diabetes Camp
- No, not independent enough yet, but has joined the Sweetpea club, who run camps, through the Diabetes Federation of Ireland.
- Vacation
- Sun holiday (we do come from rainy Ireland after all!) we go to the canaries every year. Just check sugars more often, the heat can cause hypos and they're so active they sometimes don't even realize! Oh and don't worry about the ice cream treats, they're on their holidays too!
- Question For Team
- Any advice on how to get through to an extremely fussy, stubborn 7 year old the importance of eating the lunch he has in school!

Gillian MacHugh Apr 6, 2010 (2 years ago)Thanks Donna, that's so cute the other kids at Davis' childcare are so clued in to his diabetes, without even knowing it!! Yeah with Ben that's how it is, he asks for a cheese sandwich, eats a bit, asks for a yogurt, eats half, so it's bits of everything, but hopefully enough! In school that's what we're trying to do, give him something packed with carbs but quick to eat! So nice to get a response! Gillian

kerrie Apr 6, 2010 (2 years ago)Hi, We live in Melbourne Australia, Our 9yr Fletcher was diagnosed aug 2009 aged 8yrs, he is on 2needles per day, no pump for us as yet!! still toooonew to this world for us?? fletcher can be a fussy eater also, and not too adventursome when it comes to new things? pasta is not a fav on his list but he eats a lot of tuna sandwiches, which are his fav. Am wondering with his eating at school situation, I would speak to his teachers and they should take on some duty of care that Ben does eat!! it is so important, am happy to say that we have had some probs with school but we have been told that it is a duty of care issue with such a serious illness...... ?? could that possibly help? dont know what regulations you have in Ireland but its so important for our kids . It is very difficult I know from our experiences, I now have our 9yr telling me that I "baby" him?? We just want our kids to be able to live a long happy health life.....
Our kids do a fantastic job dealing with all they have to with Type 1, they can teach us so much about how to just do it!!! Its so hard to be parents sometimes, and as I reflect of how simple our life used to be.........oh we were so very luck!
Take care

Donna Talbot Apr 6, 2010 (2 years ago)What a beautiful family. My 2 1/2 yr. old grandson Davis is our type 1. He goes to a private daycare with 5 other boys. The other boys let the caregiver know if Davis is sweaty or if he lays down (typical low for him). I love that children are so accepting of things.
Davis, being diagnosed at 10 months has been fussy at times and sometimes we have to offer him two or three things before he gets enough carbs for a meal. He loves his oatmeal, peanut butter, crackers and yogurt. So if he won't eat what is before him he is offered something else.
Perhaps Ben's lunch could consist of a juice box or power bar..maybe something small and carb packed. A candy bar would be better than nothing..lol.
Just keep encouraging him and praising him for how well he is doing.
Best wishes to all.
Keep on keeping on.
