- Hawaii
- Who or what makes your family laugh?
Our animals makes us laugh the most. Gizmo and Angel are always doing something.
- What is your favorite sports team? or activity?
We are true Cowboy fans. We like to ride dirt bikes, hike and hang out at the beach.

We try to keep busy because we know we are getting closer until Dad comes back home. He is in the US Army and stationed in Afghanistan.
- What is your favorite meal or snack? Why?
Steak and potatoes are the best on the grill.
- What resources have been useful since diagnosis? Please share a tip you think would be helpful for other parents.
I learned more information at diabetic connect then any other web site. I got more information then the doctors gave us. My daughter just went for a doctor appointment and we ended up staying in the hospital for 3 days. Her sugar was 756 and A1C was 12.5. My husband was in Afghanistan so this was a true eye opener for our family. Facebook has helped as well.

Oct. 5, 2010 4 days before her 17th Birthday day
- What question would you ask everyone who lives with Type 1 diabetes?
Do you eat whatever you want too?
- Has your child attended a diabetes camp? If so, which camp? If they enjoyed it, please tell us more about their experience.
No but it would be nice if they would have one in our area. She hasn't met anyone that is diabetic.
- What is your favorite type of family vacation? Do you have any tips managing diabetes on vacation?
We like to go camping. We are planning on going to Universal Studios but not sure how to travel with a diabetic kid.
- Do you have a specific question for our Team of Experts?
What's it like traveling with a pump for a month? We will be flying to California then driving to South Carolina.(See the response)
- Do you have a question for us?
Does life get any easier living with this disease? I always worry about her going into a coma.
- What do you think???
I wished that my husband was here to help me with her diabetes. He should be coming back home in July. It has been a rough 8 months learning and living with diabetes. I have faith that one day they will find a cure for diabetes.

cheri Sep 16, 2011 (8 months ago)Hang in there, it can be hard not knowing anyone else with diabetes, but then it's so different for each child, that sometimes it may not help. We let my daughter eat an average diet, she knows to plan/monitor for certain sweets, or wait for a low, but I try to never say no, just might have to say, let's wait a bit. I don't want diabetes to be any more of a punishment then it already is. Traveling isn't so bad, just bring lots of back up supplies and get rx's for backups there. We travel a lot and use a national pharmacy which helps. Its still scary though, we make sure everyone gets enough rest and keep a reasonable pace for activities. take care.

Laurie Aug 8, 2011 (10 months ago)Yes, it does get easier. But..it will take about a year before you really feel adept at managing diabetes. Just remember it requires constant adjustment. Eating anything in moderation as part of a balanced diet is fine. My son has had diabetes for 7 years and 8 months (but who's counting!) and he has never had an A1c over 6.9 (excluding diagnosis at 11.2). Any vacation is possible. It just takes 10 times more planning. Over the years, we have gone on a cruise, rock climbing, snorkeling, canoeing, white water rafting, to foreign countries, and water parks. It is all possible. Just plan ahead and have a backup plan.

Sylvia Jul 22, 2011 (10 months ago)For the question do you eat what you want, yes, my kids just eat whatever, though I'm a dietitian so we don't eat terribly that often, and they just bolus for the carbs. Both their a1c's have always been fine.

Susan Jul 22, 2011 (10 months ago)Hi, Yes it does get easier. It is so overwhelming at the start. I was always told it is not a science it is an artwork. Science follows rules, while in artwork ~ things don't always add up. Hunt for information on the web is a great way to learn. My son is on the pump and has been for years. But we always managed to make sure he had what he wanted to eat. We control the diabetes.

Amy Helterbrand Jul 21, 2011 (10 months ago)Camp Sweeney in Gainsville Texas is one of the best camps in the world, they see over 1200 kids (only) each summer. They run 3 week programs. My son's Doc is the director, I'm sending him nxt summer. He was diagnosed in Nov of 2009, he was 8. I've heard that camp Sweeney will change your life. Chk out the website http://www.campsweeney.org/
A really good friend of mine told me it took her son and herself about 2 years before everything became so routine that they didn't stress all the time over it. Good Luck to you and Stay Strong. -

Melissa Jul 21, 2011 (10 months ago)Many thanks to you and your family for your sacrifices for our country. It is appreciated. My husband is currently deployed to who knows where- he's in submarines. Life does get easier, you reach a new normal. Yes, my son eats whatever he wants. We sometimes have ice cream for dinner just because. We call is calcium rich dinner. As for travels, just make sure you have extra supplies ( I always aim for 2x what I should need) and keep the insulin cool! Also don't forget it in the fridge when you leave (speaking from experience)
