- What Makes You Laugh
- We are a very happy, funny family. Our kids are like little comedy acts sometimes.
- Favorite Sports Team
- We are a basketball family. Both of the boys play on school basketball teams. We love going to their games, and cheering them on. My oldest son playing with Diabetes has been a learning curve, but he loves the game..so I make sure that all is possible for him to play. He has never missed a game due to being Diabetic, and I never plan on letting him.
- What Helps You Get Through
- Knowing that I try my hardest to control the BG of a pre-teen. Knowing that my kids are well loved and cared for everyday. Knowing that a cure for Type 1 Diabetes is on the horizon. Knowing that I try my hardest everyday to teach my son how to care for himself as much as he can...so one day he can do it on his own.
- Favorite Meal
- We all love Italian type foods. We love grilling outside, and we like to try to eat vegetables and fruit at least 3 times a day.
- Helpful Resources
- Reading alot of books, Searching on the Internet, and other websites for Type 1 Diabetes. Tip: Your kid is a kid first...and a kid with Diabetes second. Try to get a break away once in a while...to keep your sanity. We are a family with diabetes...not a diabetes family.

- Question for Everyone
- Is dealing with the "puberty" years stressful and difficult ? What is something to remember during these years ?
- Diabetes Camp
- My son has attended CANDY Camp in Effingham, IL. It is a 2 day camp, from 8am-4pm. It is for ages 5-12yrs. old. My oldest has been there the past 2 years..and is volunteering there next year..and as long as he wants to. My son was leary of going the first year, then this year he was so ready to go. He had a blast while there. We don't have a week or 2 long Diabetes camp anywhere near us...so this is our alternative.
- Vacation
- We have loved all the vacations we have been on, but this year we did not go on a vacation.. T1 on vacation: Take more than enough supplies, see if there is a fridge in your motel room, don't leave supplies in a hot car, and expect possible wild swings in blood sugars...
- What Do You Think
- I think that someday there will be a cure for Type 1 Diabetes in my son's lifetime. I think that insurance companies shoud pay for more things that are required for Type 1 Diabetes....I know my son didn't ask for this disease

Beverly White Aug 6, 2010 (1 year ago)My daughter is now 17 (dx just after she turned 4)...insulin needs seem to vary hourly, as Linda said treat non compliance/lying like you would anything else non-D, expect A1C to rise and sometimes that can't be helped with the best of care so don't make it too big of an issue. Help the child to understand that D care CAN fit into their life and that they can do anything...it is like riding a bucking bronc!

Linda Aug 5, 2010 (2 years ago)You have to realize that just because your son is "old enough" to take care of himself, it does not mean that he is mature enough. Puberty is a hard period because he is changing in so many different ways but I have learned that you need to treat him like any other child. If he lies/tries to hide things about his diabetes there needs to be consequences just as if he had lied about something else. I have learned the hard way that the most important thing is communciation (as with any teen). I hope this helps... good luck!

Barb Aug 4, 2010 (2 years ago)My oldest is 17 dx'd at 22 months. Puberty was tough.....a ton of adjustments on his pump. A1C up to 8.5 in the middle of it! We are out of it now and all is back to "normal". Just remember...this too shall pass.
