Everything changed last Saturday when I called my mom from the airport on my way home. As she told me about her doctor's appointment, tears streamed down my cheeks. She'd had lumps before but they were benign. This time the lump in her breast was malignant. As I contemplated her news I just wanted to see her right away even though I knew I couldn't. Instead, I wrote to her...
The thing I love most is the freedom you gave me to find out who I am not who you wanted me to be.
You just believed in me.
At times I was dissappointed, I just needed more from you.
Maybe you couldn't give anymore.
What you gave me was enough.
You brighten my life and I can't image it without you.
I can count on the fact your always happy to hear from me.
I justed wanted you to know that you are enough.
I'll love you forever...Natalie
Some of us have special people in our lives who have breast cancer. Finding out my mom has it was difficult, but because of type 1 diabetes, I feel her pain and loneliness. I understand better the weight of her decisions and how she must feel so isolated and taxed as she contemplates her recent surgery, findings, treatments and possible outcomes. It all comes so fast, and at once...like those first few days in the hospital with our daughter. It's not the same disease, but I get it.
Many of us have had family, friends, co-workers and neighbors support our efforts to find a cure for type 1 by walking, cycling, running, or donating toward a cause like JDRF's Walk To Cure. And odds are more than one of those supporters will be diagnosed with breast cancer someday. So, the next time you see a pink ribbon, make a donation, put on your walking shoes or mount a bike...because we know what the support means.
I have personally been a fan of using the thermography for my routine yearly breast checks. I found additional information about this high-tech diagnostic tool.

I’m Natalie. I’m a mom of three kids, two with type 1 diabetes. As you know, parenting children with type 1 diabetes is a journey of long nights, lots of work, and seldom much support. There’s not much I can do about your long nights, but I hope our website and blogs offer you some support. I look forward to blogging with you.
