Easter is a special time in our home. After church and a little volunteer time we celebrate and socialize with family and friends. A lot of food and goodies go along with the day. Our morning starts off with the kids hunt for their Easter baskets.

After our family started living with diabetes we decided our kids would have the same items in their baskets. Each one is filled with a variety of treats, including candy. We mark each individually wrapped candy with the amount of carbohydrates. Loose candy such as jelly beans are counted out and placed in a baggie marked with the total carbohydrates.

As the holiday approaches, our kids get excited about how the baskets will be presented.

Here are a few ways to make basket discovery fun:

One year we tied a basket to each child's bedroom door knob, with enough string to allow us to take the basket all over the house, through rooms, under furniture, around door knobs, and up and down stair. We used a different color string for each child. The kids loved tracking down their basket by following the string. The time tested way of simply hiding baskets works great too. Pick your spots and elevating degree of difficulty for the older kids.

We found that our kids enjoy the search more than the candy and treats. This is great because in the end they don't eat much candy anyway. After all it's all about the discovery.

Have a wonderful day!
